New XR4ED Study Explores Underwater Cultural Heritage through Virtual Reality
A newly published paper titled “Underwater Virtual Exploration of the Ancient Port of Amathus” by Antreas Alexandrou, Filip Škola, Dimitrios Skarlatos, Stella Demesticha, Fotis Liarokapis, and Andreas Aristidou introduces an innovative approach to accessing and exploring underwater cultural heritage sites. Conducted in Cyprus, the research presents a gamified VR exploration of the ancient harbor of Amathus in Cyprus.
The study addresses challenges such as realistic reconstruction and environmental simulation, using photogrammetry to develop detailed 3D models of the underwater environment. Accepted in the Journal of Cultural Heritage on 16 September 2024, this work marks a significant step toward making underwater sites accessible to a broader audience, enhancing both conservation efforts and cultural appreciation.
