- Emotional Responses to Exclusionary Behaviors in Intelligent Embodied Augmented Reality Agents
In this fascinating study, we delve into how interactions with intelligent agents, embodied as augmented reality (AR) avatars displaying exclusionary behaviors, affect users’ emotions. Six participants engaged with two ChatGPT-driven agents in a knowledge acquisition scenario within an AR environment. The gaze-aware avatars, simulating realistic body language, progressively exhibited social exclusion behaviors.
Although our data did not show statistically significant results, we observed a post-interaction emotional shift, with decreased positive and negative affect. Qualitative feedback revealed that some users perceived the exclusionary behavior as system glitches, leading to disengagement. These findings highlight both the challenges and opportunities for embodied intelligent agents, showcasing their potential to influence user experiences in AR and the broader XR landscape.
